Our story

We are Jaanika and Indrek, and our shared love for clay began when we moved to Southern Estonia and started renovating an old clay house on our farm together.

His interest in the world of clay deepened further when Indrek started working at a company called Saviukumaja in Mooste in 2017.
A year later, Jaanika began painting on canvas with clay paints, which eventually developed into a unique method of creating art with clay, which we call the clay casting technique. This is a completely new and unique technique that combines all four elements of nature: earth, water, air and fire. The clay paintings created through this method offer an extraordinary connection between nature and human creativity.

Finally, the vision was born to bring clay art into a new era, combining it with modern design and sustainability principles. In early 2024, we founded the company Savimaalid OÜ, which evolved into Earthbender by the end of the same year.

Our goal is to make clay art accessible and appreciated around the world by introducing people to its meditative and therapeutic effects through workshops and training.

Clay teaches patience, flowing with life, and the ability to always start over. These are also values that are reflected in every work of art created with clay.

Clay calls us “back to earth,” to become grounded and rediscover the simple yet beautiful essences of life through clay as a material.

Jaanika Bahval

I have been a freelance clay artist and creator of the clay casting art method since 2018.

Clay as a material has always fascinated me with its ability to become anything. Clay is an earth element, preserving the electromagnetic energy of the planet. Clay is also called the “skin of the earth” because everything that passes through clay becomes new and pure. There are clays that are believed to contain the original creative energy, the pure information of the creation of life.
The symbolism of clay can also represent ideas of renewal and reincarnation, as clay can be recycled repeatedly in its raw state.
This hints at the endless possibilities of clay and its ability to start over and be reborn.

My paintings are created through the clay casting technique, where different clay colors and pigments react and blend with each other, creating an abstract expression. The clay paintings are harmonious, with an interesting and inviting texture, speaking to the observer in a gentle whisper.

Indrek Kerbo

I lived in Tallinn for a long time, where city life, exercise and work formed my daily routine. There came a time when it no longer offered anything new or inspiring. I was looking for a way out and answers that would open a new chapter in my life. In 2016, I found myself living in the middle of nature in Southern Estonia with a loving and supportive partner. This place gave us the opportunity to start over and discover the deeper essence of life.

I first encountered clay in 2016, when we started renovating a clay house. The clay walls were restored and smoothed over with clay plaster. The clay was dug from the same plot. This simple but deeply connecting experience opened the door to my love for clay as a natural and living material.

Today, I have over eight years of experience at Saviukumaja, where I have delved into discovering the properties and possibilities of natural building materials, especially clay.

I enjoy plastering and working with clay, and since 2018 I have also dedicated myself to creating Dorodango, traditional clay balls. For me, it is both a meditative and creative activity. Living in the midst of nature has taught me to appreciate the simplicity of life and being in the moment. Every day I try to learn something new and broaden my thinking.

I believe that through natural materials and traditional techniques it is possible to create something that is timeless and meaningful. My goal is to share my love and respect for clay with others - whether it is through work, creative projects or teaching.

Clay has given me the opportunity to create, discover, and inspire, and now share this journey with others, bringing the creativity and peace of Mother Earth into people's everyday lives.
