The art of clay molding
The art of clay casting is a unique artistic method created by freelance clay artist Jaanika Bahval.
It is a technique where clay is brought to the canvas in a liquid state and heated to create texture – it is a completely new and unique way of creating in the world. This art form is vibrant, natural and close to nature.

Clay casting is done with 100% natural, solar-produced clay colors and natural pigments. In the technique, different clays and pigments react and mix with each other, creating an abstract, emotional expression.
This is one of the most beautiful and unique ways to be in touch with the earth.
It is an art where all five elements meet: earth, water, air, fire and you. Works created in this way are harmonious, have an interesting and inviting texture, and speak to the viewer in a gentle whisper.

I am the only clay painting creator with long-term experience who uses the clay casting technique. I started experimenting and developing it back in 2018. The first attempts were failures – the clay paint dried off the canvas or other errors occurred. I couldn’t rely on anyone’s experience – I had to try everything myself. The first successful painting gave me immense excitement and I realized that this was something I wanted to do for the rest of my life.
At first I didn't know what to call these paintings. Googling the word "clay painting" didn't come up with anything - such a thing simply didn't exist. (By the way, in Finnish "clay painting" means clay paint.) It seemed logical to call them clay paintings, because that's what they are.

In 2020, I created an Instagram account to start sharing my journey. In the same year, my first clay painting exhibition “The Touch of Mother Earth” opened at Räpina Creative House. Since then, I have been creating constantly – with smaller or larger breaks. I have opened several exhibitions and sold and donated many works.
In 2021, clay paintings reached beyond the borders of Estonia for the first time – one of my works was represented in digital form in an international art gallery in Milan.
At one point, we started to get more and more interested in workshops. It seemed natural to take this special art method to the next level and start offering clay casting art workshops to anyone interested. For this purpose, we designed a special 10-seat clay casting table. This table collects leftover clay colors, which can be reused later.

Being in daily contact with clay, I increasingly felt that it is a very living material. I recently received confirmation of this through the PlantWave device – this is a device that converts plant frequencies into sound. Similarly, clay also has its own living frequency, which can be transformed into sound. In our studio, we offer workshops accompanied by clay sounds – these sounds have a deeply meditative and grounding effect.

Today, our art studio operates in Mooste Manor, which offers an elegant and calming atmosphere – it is one of the most special art studios in the world. Here we organize inspiring, creative and therapeutic nature-friendly workshops.
